Help, don’t ignore us, rape victims cry out after Ochanya

My mother was deaf, so I could not tell her

Jos – Since the case of Ochanya Ogbanje, a 13- year- old girl who was sexually abused by his family members until she died in Benue   came to the fore; there have been public outcry and wide condemnations of the heinous act.

Many have taken to the conventional and social media to express their anger. Protests especially by women groups have been held in States across the country including Plateau with all asking for justice not only for the deceased but also other rape victims who are suffering in many homes across the country.

Although the late Ochanya is not living to tell her story, some rape victims in Jos, the Plateau State capital have condemned the culture of silence after rape, the stigmatization of victims and the seeming encouragement of rapists by not dealing decisively with them.

A multiple rape victim, Charity Audu, noted that the late Ochanya needs justice to rest in peace. She told a pathetic story of her own experience.

“There are so many Ochenyas everywhere in our society,” she started. “ Some we know, some we don’t know and those we know, we ignore or are not able to say it out. I am among the many Ochanyas in the society. To be raped and you carry the stigma is not easy. I was raped three times, when I was five years, when I was nine years and when I was between 15 and 16 years by three different men.

“At five, when I was raped, my uncle would take me to the room and told me he was going to buy biscuit for me and he kept molesting me and you couldn’t say anything especially as my mum was deaf. I did not know how to tell her what was happening to me. Communication between my mum and I was hard.

“When I was nine years old, the same thing happened to me and I was not able to talk. I was so traumatized and scared to the extent that, I started having asthma attacks. This was because most of the time I was so scared and shivering whenever someone came close to me. I don’t know if fear caused it, I don’t know it could cause it but I suffered asthma attacks so many times that I started thinking and believing that nobody loved me, that I was just on my own.

“It was a pity that my mum was deaf and if I wanted to talk to her, I would not be able to so I started thinking that she did not love me because of the communication problems we had.”

Speaking further, she added, “When I was 15 years, a neighbour raped me and I was lucky that I got someone to talk to this time because at that time I had come in contact with Mrs. Kyenpia, my mum at CLAPAI who talked to us on what to do in the case of rape which I did not know at five and nine years old. She really helped me out because immediately after the rape, I just ran straight to her, I did not change my cloth, I did not have my bath, I just ran to her and told her what happened. Luckily for me, the guy was arrested and justice served.

“I got trauma counselling, read several books about trauma healing and gradually, things are turning out well for me but there are so many Ochanyas that need help. Let us be there for them. I am lucky to be alive but Ochanya is not so the society owes it to young girls to protect them so that it’s not only when the worst happens that we come out to protest.”

Another victim, Mildred Bako is also seeking support for other victims saying the society should not wait until another girl dies before speaking out.

Her words: “The society should not be quick to judge but offer support to rape victims. I was raped by my own relative when I was nine years old. I was raped again when I was 16, that particular one was very bad because I got pregnant without even knowing I was pregnant. The whole incident affected me psychologically; I struggled through everything, I did not grow in the environment of love, all I knew was survival.”

Mildred who could not say much as she broke down in tears however appealed for help in everyone’s neighbourhood so that children who are undergoing sexual abuses could be rescued from the psychological and physical tortures.  However, Mrs. Kyenpia Nyabam who provided support for Charity told Saturday Vanguard that trauma counselling is very necessary in helping a victim come of of traumatizing situations.

Her words, “CLAPAI stands for Child Love and Protection Advocacy Initiative; we have been in existence in the last 12 years. How I met Charity could be said to be an interesting incident.

“Her mother was deaf, she is late now and the grandmother whom she was staying with was looking for where she could get help for her education because we have a school where orphans and other vulnerable children attend free of charge. That was how we met her.

“She came in when she was nine years old after the second rape incident. We noticed that there was something with her; a very brilliant child but she was smiling less unlike other children that would come in and between one and two weeks, they would blend with others. She was withdrawn.

“We have this club called Girls’ Club where we talk about issues like sex, rape, menstrual hygiene and others. There was this time we took a week talking about rape and what needs to be done in case of rape and gradually, she opened up and told us what happened to her, she talked about what she had been going through over the years.

“We realized that before that time, she would wake up in the night and be coughing very dry cough, we had to rush her to the hospital, it was panic attacks over the years which resulted into asthmatic attacks. We had to bring her closer though she was still in the environment where she was raped, when her mum died, her neighbour raped her again at the age of 15 so we decided to intervene and bring her out of the environment where she was staying with her grandma when her mum died.”

She observed that love, care, patience, understanding and counselling are needed to make rape victims heal as she stated, “We took Charity out and put her in my house, not the orphanage so that she could undergo proper trauma healing. She’s been with my family now for almost four years, she is okay although once in a while, she has nightmares but it is a process and we know she will eventually be fine.”

Governor El-Rufai Picks A Woman As Running Mate (Photo)

Nasir El-Rufai, the Kaduna State Governor, has announced the selection of a Muslim woman, Hadiza Balarabe, as his running mate for the 2019 general election.

A statement by the governor’s spokesman, Samuel Aruwan, said the choice of Ms Balarabe as running mate continues Mr El-Rufai’s deliberate policy of promoting women.

“There are five female commissioners in his 14-person cabinet, a feat not attained even by governors that had much larger cabinets. This is the first time in the history of Kaduna State that a major political party will select a woman as running mate.

“The incumbent Deputy Governor, Arc. Barnabas Yusuf Bala, has opted to go to the National Assembly and has since emerged as the APC’s candidate for the southern Kaduna senatorial district.

“Dr. Hadiza Balarabe is the current Executive Secretary of the Kaduna State Primary Health Care Development Agency, a position she has held since February 2016. In that role she has overseen the Kaduna State Government’s programme to revitalise and strengthen primary health care as the core of health service delivery in the state. Under her watch, the state is renovating and equipping 255 primary health centres with tools to assist better antenatal services and safer delivery. The agency has also helped expand vaccine coverage to protect children across the state.

“Prior to joining the Kaduna State Government, Dr. Hadiza Balarabe was Director of Public Health in the FCT. She studied Medicine at the University of Maiduguri, and graduated in 1988. She was a Senior Registrar at the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital before joining the services of the FCT in 2004.

“Dr. Hadiza Balarabe, who was born in 1966, is from Sanga local government which is located in the southern Kaduna senatorial district.”

‘As women, we must confidently own our spaces, sell our vision’

Tomi Otudeko is Head of Innovation and Sustainability at the Honeywell Group. She is also Director of Itanna, a four-months training program for tech-enabled Nigerian startups. Startups accepted into the accelerator receive major funding from the Honeywell Group. Selected startups also need to demonstrate traction through customer growth or partnerships with customer acquisition enablers. Participants need to have a clear vision, technical capability, sector knowledge and the desire to scale. In this interview, Otudeko meets with Mary Olushoga, Founder of AWP Network to discuss what inspired her company to launch this accelerator program and plans for the future.

What do women entrepreneurs need to know about finding investors and securing investment deals?
Women entrepreneurs like all entrepreneurs need to solve real problems. Investors will invest in businesses they believe have a high chance of success. As entrepreneurs pitch for investors, they need to be knowledgeable about their business and be confident as they pitch. It is not enough to know about your business, entrepreneurs should also be knowledgeable about their industry, their competition, and their numbers. Women in Nigeria are encouraged to be modest and demure, but when it comes to pitching for investments, we cannot afford to revert to stereotypes. We must confidently own our space and sell our vision.

Who inspired you to start? Could you explain why Honeywell Group chose to invest in tech startups?
For us at Honeywell Group, Itanna was the next logical step. As a Group with many “traditional” businesses, we had thought about the future of our businesses and the ultimate question became how do we ensure that we are sustainable for generations to come. When the opportunity to create Itanna came about, it was clear that investing in and helping to develop the businesses of the future was not just an option, but a key imperative for the Group.

How did you come up with your business name?
Itanna (i-tah-nah) is derived (although not pronounced the same way) from the Yoruba word Ìtanná, which means to light up or to ignite. My team and I struggled to come up with a name that adequately captured what we were trying to achieve. So I reached out to my father about the name and he took the time to think about it and came up with a few options. As soon as I heard the word ‘Itanna,’ I knew that it was right. At Itanna, we are focused on igniting businesses that can help to ‘light up’ change in Nigeria and the continent as a whole, which is why I feel ‘Itanna’ is apt.

Who is your target market?
We are looking to help tech and tech-enabled businesses in Lagos. The businesses we want to invest in do not have to be purely technology startups but startups that use technology to disrupt the sector they are in. We are interested in startups that solve problems and believe that these businesses will impact the society and the economy.

In selecting the businesses to invest in, we ensure that we are clear on our selection criteria and that we invest in people that are not only solving real problems but have already taken the risk to create a product or service. The businesses we look at must have made some traction and we believe our investment in such a company would help to catalyze their growth.

What is your competitive edge?
As a corporate-backed venture capital fund and accelerator, Itanna has the unique position of being able to leverage on Honeywell Group’s 45 years of experience, building and scaling businesses across different sectors. To the extent that we can, we are able to tap into Honeywell Group’s extensive network of entrepreneurs and mentors to impart their knowledge and industry experience to the businesses that are part of our accelerator program. We also use our networks to open doors and to assist our investee companies to build their businesses.

What is the long-term plan for Itanna?
To be a proactive member of the local tech ecosystem and support in growing businesses solving real problems. We would like to have a portfolio of companies that are innovative and have grown over time into businesses that are competing both locally and globally.

What key things have you learned since starting this idea?

. Never stop learning. The entire process of this business has been a learning experience and I have learned so many new things in the past few years.

. Know what you stand for and what you want to achieve but be flexible on how you get there. The process has been a series of pivots and changes, as we have had to adjust how we get to the end.

. Accountability. Strong corporate governance is critical for growth and success. The progress we have made at Itanna has been due to the fact that we are accountable to our steering committee. As I continue to engage with startups, I observe that the more successful startups have strong boards of directors and advisers they are accountable to.

. Your Team Matters. It is a team effort and we have been most successful when we partner with others. There is no single person whose work is more important than the other. Everyone’s expertise is necessary to make this a successful venture not only for those of us who work at Itanna, but also for the startups who are part of our cohort.

. Do not give up on your goals. The process of getting Itanna off the ground was a lengthy one for our team. But as shared earlier, knowing what you stand for and what you want to achieve is important in keeping you focused and reminds you of what you are working towards. We always knew the end goal and kept working towards that regardless of the challenges we faced and here we are, still standing.

What advice do you have for youths looking to start an idea but say ‘there is no money’?
“I don’t have the capital,” “Nobody wants to give me capital,” “Where will I get money to execute my idea.” These are common reasons people give for not starting or putting their ideas into action. Yes, access to capital is one of the biggest threats to entrepreneurs around the world and every year, thousands of passionate people – especially in Africa – give up on their business ideas, projects and dreams just because they cannot access capital.

In my opinion, a lack of capital is not the real problem. The problem is that many do not know where to look for it. A lack of awareness about where and how to raise capital is the real dream killer. According to Quartz Africa Reports, more capital has been flowing into Africa. In 2015, the continent received up to $276.5 million in startup funding and in 2016, the number rose to $366.8 million (Quartz Africa, 2017). 

These numbers are just for tech startups alone. There are a lot of Incubators and Accelerators like Itanna, CC Hub, etc. who not only provide funding but help in accelerating and mentoring businesses to achieve their goals.

In summary, the lack of capital should not be an issue to execute one’s ideas. Young people must work at getting the information. There is money out there; you just need to know where to look. As long as you have a good idea, work hard and have a bit of luck, you will succeed.

Some examples of young people with ideas but not enough funding are: Jason Njoku, CEO and Founder of iROKOtv (mobile entertainment and internet TV platform for African movies); Bethlehem Alemu, Founder of soleRebels (Africa’s popular and faster growing footwear brand), etc. These entrepreneurs made it against all the financial odds because they knew where to look.

How can we support and improve innovation in Africa?
To support and improve innovation in Africa, it is essential that the ecosystem is effectively developed. This requires the right input into the system to ensure there is an enabling environment. Education is key and the curiosity for innovation needs to start early, across all levels of the educational system, and STEM education needs to be a focus. We also need to develop people that think differently and are learning for understanding and not just for recollection or regurgitation. More importantly, government and businesses must also work at funding research projects to encourage and develop these ideas.

In terms of business environment, there should be more emphasis on making the process of establishing and running enterprises easier with a focus on transparency and lowering the costs of financial & legal regulations and compliance.

Lastly, we all know how difficult it is to do business in Africa, and infrastructure is a major inhibitor. It is difficult to innovate when you are struggling with the basics such as power, transportation, and basic connectivity. Government has a key role to play in ensuring the ease of doing business in Africa and freeing up the players to innovate. The responsibility is for all players in the ecosystem to help build the innovative Africa we truly want to see.

But if you'll look closer, you'll see that there was more to it than that. When Sarah laid hold of the promise of God by faith, it began to restore her physically to such an extent that when King Abimelech saw her, he wanted her for his wife.

Think about that! At 90 years old, she was so beautiful that a king wanted her in his harem. What's more, after she gave birth to Isaac, the Bible says she nursed him till he was weaned. Then she kept right on living until that boy was raised!

Now, I'm not telling you you can have a baby at 90 like Sarah did. She had a specific promise from God about that. But I am telling you that if you'll believe God for renewed strength and health in your old age, He'll provide it for you. In fact, Psalm 103 says that's one of His benefits. It says God will fill your mouth with good things so your youth is renewed like the eagle's.

That is God's desire for you in your old age. A powerful, experienced champion of the Word with your strength renewed by faith. Start confessing that today. Fill your mouth with the promises of God. Say, "Praise God, my youth is renewed like the eagle's." You'll still go to heaven when your work on earth is through—but you won't just fade away. You'll fly out of here in a blaze of glory like the conqueror God created you to be.

EPL: Sarri finally confirms Chelsea’s captain

Chelsea coach, Maurizio Sarri has confirmed that defender Gary Cahill will remain the club’s captain despite the uncertainty surrounding his future at Stamford Bridge.

Cahill has made just one Premier League appearance this season and has also attracted attention from Championship clubs, Sheffield Wednesday and Aston Villa.

The former England star is currently behind David Luiz, Antonio Rudier and Andreas Christensen in the pecking order under Sarr’s squad.

“As we have seen in the last matches, the captain is Cahill, like in the last match [against Derby in the Carabao Cup],” ESPN quoted Sarri as saying on Friday.

“When he isn’t on the pitch, our captain is Azpilicueta. Our captain is Cahill.

“Cahill was the captain last season,” Sarri added. “I spoke with his teammates and they all told me he really was a very good captain.”

Some Christians feel that they have outgrown the need for counselors in their lives, but nothing could be further from the truth. The unfortunate thing is that such Christians who erroneously think this way gradually graduate to the level of believing that they can also live their Christian lives in isolation.



Resultant effect of this is that they stop fellowshipping with other believers, contrary to our Lord’s injunction in Hebrews 10:25, which says:

“Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.”

Every one of us will always need a counselor at one point in time or the other till we see Jesus in glory (l Corinthians 13:9-12).

I recall the story of the first dump truck we bought at the Redemption Camp in Nigeria. It was a result of wise counsel I got from our Camp Manager. We had received some money that looked substantial to me, and I felt we should go ahead to execute some of our building projects.

As I was contemplating on the next project to embark on, the Lord spoke to me, instructing me to seek counsel from our Camp Manager. When my commander in-Chief speaks, l don’t waste time in carrying out His bidding.

I got to the Camp Manager, and contrary to what I had in mind, he recommended that we should buy dump truck for transporting sand from the quarry, where we could buy sand for construction at a cheaper price, instead of purchasing from resellers at an exorbitant rate as we had been doing.

He was of the opinion that we would need a lot of sand for the projects at hand, and having our own truck for getting sand at a cheap price would reduce the cost of these building projects substantially.

That was how we got the dump truck, and this opened our eyes to other opportunities as it further reduced the cost of our construction projects drastically. Open Heaven 1 November 2018

Isaiah 9:2 says that the people who walked in darkness have seen a great light, and those who dwelt in the land of the shadow of Death have received the light of life. How did this happen? The Holy Spirit answers is in Isaiah 9:6 saying:

“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince 0f Peace.”

Jesus is the Counselor of counselors. How yielded are you to the counsel He gives you through His word, through the voice of His Spirit inside you, and through the people He has placed around you? If you do not receive His counsel, His gentle Spirit will not force you, but you will bear the consequences that follow.

     Topic: He Opened the Way - 2 November, 2018.

The deity of the Lord Jesus Christ is something that can never be brought into question by any born-again believer. Our very salvation rests on the fact that Jesus Christ is divine, the second person of the Godhead, God—the Son.

The beloved disciple and apostle, John, forever puts to rest any doubt about that in John 1:1,14. Anyone who doubts what those verses say could not possibly have been born of the kingdom of God. For the deity of Jesus forms the very foundation of our faith in Him.

Yet, if you'll search the Gospels, you'll see that Jesus didn't go around proclaiming Himself as God during His 33 years on earth. He acknowledged that He was the Son of God, the Messiah. He referred to God as His Father (which enraged the Pharisees), but He never made the assertion that He was the Most High God. In fact, He told His disciples that the Father God was greater and mightier than He (John 14:28).

The reason is simple. He hadn't come to earth just as God. He'd come also as man. The Word says He set aside His divine power and took the form of a human being—with all its limitations. Since God was His Father, He was not born with the sin nature that had been passed along to the sons of Adam. But by being born of a woman, in all other respects He became a man and called Himself the Son of Man or, literally, the Son of Adam.

How, then, did He do all those mighty works? The same way He expects us to do them today—by the Anointing and the power of the Holy Spirit (Acts 10:38). He said, "It's the Father within Me who does the work."

What does that mean to you? It means that Jesus meant exactly what He declared when He said that you, as a believer, would be able to do the works that He did (John 14:12)!

It means that you, as a reborn child of God, filled with the same Holy Spirit as Jesus was, have the opportunity to live as He lived when He was on earth.

In fact, that is exactly what He intends. He went before you, as a man, and opened the way. Don't just admire Him for it. Follow Him in it today!

See Corpse Of Missing Army General Alkali Recovered In A Well In Jos. Photos

The remains of Major general Muhammed Idris Alkali, the retired army general, who was declared missing on September 3, have been found in an abandoned well in Plateau state.

His body parts were found in an abandoned well in Guchwet village of Shen district, Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State.

Although no medical test has been done to confirm if the body parts found were actually that of Mr alkali, the army said its investigations confirmed it so.

The body parts found were being put in a body bag as at the time of this report.

A brigadier general, Umar Ibrahim, the Garrison Commander, 3 division, spoke to journalists at the scene. He said some of the suspects who participated in the killing of the general brought the army to the well.

Last week, the army announced it located a shallow grave where the late general was initially buried before the body was exhumed and taken someplace else.

A military parade will take place at the site of the well after all the body parts have been removed, Mr Ibrahim said.

Online platform seeks to improve disease diagnosis, treatment, reduce death by 10%

Stack Diagnostics, Nigeria’s first molecular diagnostics and personalised medicine company has launched DiagnoseMe.Africa, an online platform that provides diagnostics and treatment tools for healthcare providers in Africa.

According to the company, the diagnostic platform provides over 300 specialist tests across a wide range of conditions such as genetic disorders, infections (viral/bacteria), cancer, sexual transmitted disease (STD), paternity, autoimmune and hormonal disorders, vitamin deficiencies, and allergies among others.

Speaking during the unveiling of the DiagnoseMe.Africa platform in Lagos, the Chief Executive Officer, Stack Diagnostics, said the burden of diseases requiring molecular and genetic testing were on the rise in Nigeria, hence the need for a platform to addressed the problem.

Ene-Obong lamented that 20 million Nigerians are infected with hepatitis; 22 million women infected with the human papillomavirus (26.3 per cent prevalence), while over 100, 000 infants die from misdiagnosis of sickle cell yearly.

He added that over 100, 000 Nigerian women have breast cancer yearly; of which the survival rate is 10 per cent due to the inability to differentiate breast cancer types using molecular techniques, among other.

He lamented that due to the similarity in presentation of viral diseases and the lack of molecular diagnostics, patients are frequently misdiagnosed with malaria, resulting in unnecessary costs to the patient, late detection, and death.

He said there is dis-aggregation and hyper-fragmentation among health care providers, diagnostics labs and the tools they use, which he said has resulted in poor referral network, poor navigation of specialist health care providers.

“Doctors lack the tools to aid clinical decision support, referral of cases and histories conveniently and securely to specialist treatment centers. Patients equally lack the tools to search and find qualified doctors capable of treating their conditions resulting in medical tourism for patients able to afford this option,” he said.

The CEO said the online diagnostics would provide genetic testing services and other hard-to-access services to providers and patients, using a centralized lab approach, and an online marketplace for ordering and receiving test results, confirming diagnosis, and referring patients for secondary and tertiary care.

This, he said would improve the life expectancy of Nigerians and reduce the death rate to 10 per cent.

The Medical Advisor, Stacks diagnostics/DiagnoseMe Africa, Dr Nchiewe Ani, urged Nigerians to embrace the medical service, as it would improve patients’ experiences and save cost while getting to the root of their ailments.

“It affords us the unparalleled ability to improve health care service delivery and eliminate certain avoidable need for referral abroad for tests not usually done in Nigeria,” she said.

Nchiewe also stressed that the online medical platform was a patient digitalised problem-solving tool that could function across 36 states in Nigeria, where the doctors provide medical service free of charge to patients.

Fresh!!! 88 million Nigerians now living in extreme poverty

88 million Nigerians now living in extreme poverty, this comes a few months after the country overtook India as the world poverty capital.

The latest figure was achieved after a whooping number of 1.1 million Nigerians slipped into extreme poverty in just four months.

This means that the number of Nigerians living below $1.90 per day now equals to 88 million.

The Brookings Institution in June, named Nigeria as the world’s poverty capital, with 86.9 million Nigerians living in extreme poverty.
